Valganciclovir, sold
under the brand name Valcyte among others, is an antiviral medication used to
treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in those with HIV/AIDS or following organ
transplant. It is often used long term as it only suppresses rather than cures
the infection. Valganciclovir is taken by mouth. Common side effects include
abdominal pain, headaches, trouble sleeping, nausea, fever, and low blood cell
counts. Other side effects may include infertility and kidney problems. When
used during pregnancy, it causes birth defects in some animals. Valganciclovir
is the L-valyl ester of ganciclovir and works when broken down into ganciclovir
by the intestine and liver.
Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
(from the Greek cyto-,
"cell," and megalo-, "large") is a genus of viruses in the order Herpesvirales,
in the family Herpesviridae, in the subfamily Betaherpesvirinae.
Humans and monkeys serve as natural hosts. The eight species in this genus
include the type species, Human betaherpesvirus 5 (HCMV,
human cytomegalovirus, HHV-5), which is the species that infects humans. Diseases associated with HHV-5
include mononucleosis and pneumonia. In the medical literature, most
mentions of CMV without further specification refer implicitly to human CMV.
Human CMV is the most studied of all cytomegaloviruses.
Uses
Valganciclovir is an antiviral drug. It is changed in the body
to the active form of the drug called ganciclovir. It is used to prevent
disease caused by a virus called cytomegalovirus (CMV) in people who have
received organ transplants. CMV disease can lead to serious infections in the
body, including an infection in the eye, called CMV retinitis, that can cause
blindness. Valganciclovir works by slowing the growth of the CMV virus. It
helps prevent the spread of infection to other areas of the body.
