Trastuzumab, sold under the brand name Herceptin among
others, is a monoclonal antibody used
to treat breast cancer and stomach cancer. It is specifically used for cancer that is HER2 receptor-positive. It
may be used by itself or together with other chemotherapy medications. Trastuzumab
is given by slow injection into a vein and injection just under the skin.
Breast cancer
Breast cancer is a cancer that develops from breast tissue. Signs of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast, a change in breast shape, dimpling of the skin, fluid coming from the nipple, a newly-inverted
nipple, or a red or scaly patch of skin. In those with distant spread of the disease, there may be bone pain, swollen lymph nodes, shortness of breath,
or yellow skin.
Stomach cancer
Stomach cancer also is known as gastric cancer, is cancer that develops from the lining of the stomach. Most cases of stomach cancers are gastric carcinomas, which can be divided into a number of subtypes including gastric adenocarcinomas. Lymphomas and mesenchymal tumors may also develop in the stomach.
Uses
Trastuzumab is used to treat certain breast or stomach cancers that produce more than the normal amount of a certain
substance called HER2 protein. Trastuzumab belongs to a class of medications known as monoclonal
antibodies. It works by slowing or stopping the growth
of cancer cells.
Side Effects
Redness/irritation at the injection site, diarrhea,
muscle/joint/back pain, stomach/abdominal pain, headache, trouble sleeping, nausea, vomiting, mouth sores,
and loss of appetite may occur. Nausea and vomiting can be severe. In some cases, your doctor
may prescribe medication to prevent or relieve nausea and vomiting. Eating several small
meals, not eating before treatment, or limiting activity may help lessen some
of these effects. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor
or pharmacist promptly.
Precautions
Before using trastuzumab,
tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to any trastuzumab,
trastuzumabderuxtecan, trastuzumabemtansine, or trastuzumab-hyaluronidase
products; or if you have any other allergies. This product
